When I first started writing this article – I was seriously thinking about asking my LinkedIn connections to endorse me for sleep. And then I thought – wouldn’t they have to have first-hand experience of how I sleep to do that? Now that would be just too creepy.
The point here is that sleep is one of the best tools you have to make your work and your life better. Yet too often we sacrifice sleep for working more, playing more, doing more, and having more. And the reality – lack of sleep is actually resulting in less. We have less energy to devote to our jobs and those that really matter to us. We have less focused attention. We are less able to think and more apt to make mistakes.
We know this! We know that we get cranky when we don’t get enough sleep. We know that we gain more weight when we don’t get enough sleep. We know that we can’t focus and think well, when we don’t get enough sleep. But we continue to sacrifice our sleep.
For years, that was me. I knew sleep was essential, yet I would continue to stay up later than I needed to (isn’t that part of being an adult – no set bedtime?) I would drag myself out of bed earlier than my body wanted to. It’s just the way it was. Until I decided that it didn’t have to be that way. I made the decision to make sleep my top priority. I get to choose and I choose to feel better by sleeping better. Now that is a good adult decision!
What Makes Me a Rock Star Sleeper?
I have a nightly ritual that while simple in design – really prepares me for a good night’s sleep. And I do this ritual at the same time each night.
Life is not lived with intentions, but action.
